Other cool apps
These are other cool apps that didn’t make it to the list for different reasons. The list meant to be essentials apps for everyone. So if an app is too specialized I didn’t include it. If an application is used mostly by geeks, but family-oriented users would not see any use to it, it wasn’t included in the list. Here are these great applications that didn’t made it to the list :
- IRC client : Snak
- FTP client : Forklift
- French grammar check : Antidote RX
- Workflow for professional photographers : Aperture
- If iMovie is not enough for your needs : Final Cut Express
- Great puzzle game : Enigmo and Enigmo 2
- Great alternative to iWeb : Rapidweaver
- Video Screen grab for tutorials : iShowU HD
- Producing cartoons with your own photo : Comiq Life
- Producing and mixing sound files : Sound Studio
- Making a back-up on-line : Mozy
- Keeping files in sync on multiple computers : Dropbox
- Keeping passwords organized (better than keychain) : 1password
- Quick launcher using the keyboard : Quicksilver

This is a great list of essential apps for Mac users. The one kind of app that I felt is missing for this electronic age is a password manager. For that, I would include in my list the 1Password app (http://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password). I know it is a not so cheap shareware, but it is a software anyone would end up using daily doesn’t matter what they do with their Macs. There is a way to securely sync all the data with all Macs you use through Dropbox and with an iPhone through their free software available in the app store, meaning the information is pretty much anywhere you need it.
Thanks for this. Have it bookmarked for later in the year when I make The Switch.
Thanks! This is a great list and it gave me some good ideas. However, I think you are undervaluing Quicksilver – it is the first application I install and one of the few that start up with my computer. I use it to open every application, file, doc. If a user, like me, prefers to use the keyboard it is essential.
Also – what do you think of CiphSafe as a password tool?
There is slick little utility that allows Windows 7-like management of your open dialog boxes and screen real estate. I really like it: http://www.mizage.com/divvy/. It’s very nice.
Thanks Nathan. You are right. This is a really great utilities. I will probably add it when I revise the list.
